Miya Guggs
Kansas City, Missouri native, Miya Guggs had to decide between two passions which felt most like her destiny, and thankfully for us all, she chose music. The statuesque beauty is as dynamic on the basketball court as she is with a pen! A woman of many gifts, Miya’s talents on the court allowed her to earn a scholarship to her hometown college basketball team, Kansas City Community College. However, she first confessed to her aunt that it was music that she wanted to pursue.
“She was like, you can do this, and I was on my way. It was nice to hear encouragement, especially at a young age, because most people will tell kids to be more realistic. I appreciate what my aunt told me— I feel like the universe spoke through her,” Miya said. The singer and songwriter also received support from her parents to pursue the music that constantly played in her head and her heart—even when she was on the court.
Miya started to pour all of her devotion into writing and performing her music. The results can now be heard in a series of singles that showcase her vocal and songwriting skills like, “He Ain’t You,” the hip-hop inspired “Bad Boy,” where she is joined by Richard Wingo, member of the legendary R&B group Jagged Edge and on her latest single, the sultry ballad, “Situationships.” The new single tells the story of a person trying to manage emotions and expectations in a relationship. “I was on Twitter one day and one of the topics that was really trending was ‘situationships’, and I was like, I can talk about that because I’ve experienced that,” she recalled.
Miya’s unrelenting determination to follow her dreams and give her all to whatever she wants for herself is why she is our latest Amethyst Gem. Her debut EP, Patterns is due out later this year. Congrats, Miya!
