These three organizations offer resources that target the most pressing health issues that affect Black women
Drastic gaps in access to life-preserving healthcare for Black women is a matter that can no longer go ignored. Such disparities mean the diseases contracted by Black women are more likely to be lethal. Here are three services committed to providing life-saving resources to women of color.
The Center for Disease Control reports that Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women. The Black Mamas Matter Alliance intends to change those numbers by providing maternal health services to Black women to reduce chances for maternal deaths. As their vision statement says, “We envision a world where Black mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy.”
THE SISTERS NETWORK The Sisters Network is an national African American Women’s Breast Cancer Survivor Organization with an overall goal to reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer among Black women (breast cancer death rates are 40% higher among Black women than white women) through increasing national attention, providing information and resources and aiding research efforts.
Located in Washington, D.C., the Mamatoto Village organization is named one of the D.C. areas best nonprofit organizations! Mamatoto Village is dedicated to helping forge career pathways for Black women in public health and human services, as well as providing access to better perinatal support for women and families.
