Jody Watley Named First-Ever Ambassador Of NMAAM

Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the museum tells the story of America’s music and the people that made it!

It’s Women’s History Month and Black women continue to make history every day! R&B and Pop icon, Jody Watley has been selected to serve as the first-ever membership ambassador for the National Museum of African American Music. The Grammy Award winning fashionista and trendsetter is not only considered one of the architects of 21st-century Pop, but she has effortlessly  and successfully crossed several music genres from R&B to Pop and Jazz.  The Chicago native had her first stage appearance at 8 years old with family friend and godfather, Jackie Wilson.

Watley would go on to become a Soul Train dancer and eventually join R&B group, Shalamar.  After leaving the group in 1983, she signed with MCA Records and released her debut album, Jody Watley, on which she co-wrote six on the project’s nine songs. The album included hits, “Some Kind Of Lover,” “Don’t You Want Me” and her signature track, “Looking For A New Love.”
