It’s Women’s History Month and Black women continue to make history every day! R&B and Pop icon, Jody Watley has been selected to serve as the first-ever membership ambassador for the National Museum of African American Music. The Grammy Award winning fashionista and trendsetter is not only considered one of the architects of 21st-century Pop, but she has effortlessly and successfully crossed several music genres from R&B to Pop and Jazz. The Chicago native had her first stage appearance at 8 years old with family friend and godfather, Jackie Wilson.
Watley would go on to become a Soul Train dancer and eventually join R&B group, Shalamar. After leaving the group in 1983, she signed with MCA Records and released her debut album, Jody Watley, on which she co-wrote six on the project’s nine songs. The album included hits, “Some Kind Of Lover,” “Don’t You Want Me” and her signature track, “Looking For A New Love.”
