The R&B legend and musician is joined by friends for a VERZUZ livestream concert!
D’Angelo performed live from the Apollo Theater in New York City on Saturday night, February 27th for the first-ever solo #VERZUZ concert. The R&B and Soul legend first talked about the event during an Instagram Live session with DJ D-Nice. The event followed the first VERZUZ battle of the new year between R&B singers, Keyshia Cole and Ashanti which garnered more than 6 million viewers! However, D’Angelo‘s show would differ, as he wasn’t ‘battling’ anyone at all–instead he chose to be joined by fellow music friends and musicians including trumpeter Keyon Harrold, R&B artist and musician H.E.R and rappers Red Man and Method Man for a concert event–and an event it was! The multi-faceted artist opened the concert with a new song before breaking into “Cruisin’ originally performed by Motown legend, Smokey Robinson.
“Yo, I’m singing with D’Angelo right now! Like, what is life?!” – H.E.R, while performing with music legend, D’Angelo
The 90-minute set continued with D’Angelo‘s performances of his hits including “Chicken Grease,” “The Root,” and of course, the medley of songs from his hit LPs, Brown Sugar and Black Messiah. He even paid tribute to the late rapper, Prodigy. But it was the acoustic performance of 1998’s “Nothing Even Matters” with Grammy-winning artist, H.E.R. that stole the show! D’Angelo originally performed the song with the great Lauryn Hill for her classic, Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album. The handsome musician closed out his VERZUZ concert with a performance of his smash hit, “How Does It Feel.” What a way to close out Black History Month!
